North Dalmatia, beginning at the island Pag, is characterized by its hundreds of islands, including the Kornati Archipelago, a national park, which consists of nearly 150 islands, islets and reefs. They are famous for their cliffs, stone pastures and variety of vegetation. Except for a couple of small villages on the island of Kornat and a few seasonal homes of fishermen these islands are uninhabited. Any of their beautiful coves provide a spectacular mooring for an evening under the stars. To the north there are the islands of Silba, Olib and Ist, which is shaped like a butterfly, with their charming fishing villages, while closer to the mainland and near Zadar, the main center of North Dalmatia, are the islands of Ugljan and Pasman. Sibenik, on the mainland, is the main center of the southern part of this area. Nearby one can visit the islands Zirje, Prvic, Krapaje and Zlarin as well as the waterfalls of the Krka River, which are a national park, near Skradin.
