Sailing Terms
Tiller A stick or tube used to control the rudder for steering.
Transom The back, outer part of the stern.
Trim To adjust sails.
Turnbuckle A fitting used to adjust the length and tension of a shroud or forestay.
Upwind Toward the wind or the opposite direction the wind is blowing.
VHF Very high frequency radio.
Wake The swell left in the water by a boat.
Winch A mechanical device used to assist in trimming the sails.
Windlass A winch for hauling in the anchor chain.
Window A transparent portion of a mainsail or jib.
Windward Toward or closer to the wind.
Wing the jib Trimming the jib on the opposite side as the mainsail when running.
